What’s in a name?

Updated: Jun 12, 2022

When it comes to marine conservation organizations, they come in all shapes and sizes, and so do their names.

Many of the organizations are extremely well known, and their names are quickly recognizable: such as: Oceana, The Ocean Conservancy, Parley for the Ocean, Sea Shepherd, Mission Blue, WWF, Wildlife Conservation Society, to name a few of the giants in the field.

Most names say exactly who they are and/or what they do, being quite descriptive. This plainspeak category includes: Surfers Against Sewage, Dive Against Debris, Swim Against Plastic, Pelagos Sanctuary, Plastic Free Seas Worldwide, to mention just a few.

There are also those who play with words with effect: Clean C, Be Whale Wise, EcoMares, Coral Gardeners, Shark Stewards, Shark SOS, SeasTheDay, MarViva, MareVivo, Oceankind, amongst many others.

Then there is a bunch of seriously cool names - some quirky, some cryptic, some noble, some which simply bring a smile to one’s face. Here are some of my favourites (hyperlinked to their websites):

So many groups, so many people, all working towards a common goal, healthy oceans and robust marine life.
